Compromise to Repeal Services Tax Blows Up, Members Urged to Contact Legislative Leadership

A deal to repeal the services tax and replace it with a surcharge to the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) fell apart on 11/28/07 when both parties ended negotiations within 48 hours of the implementation of the services tax.

“We’re hoping the Legislature will return to negotiations either today or Friday, but nothing is certain at this point,” said Chuck Hadden, the Michigan Manufacturers Association’s (MMA’s) vice president of government affairs.

“We need our membership to contact Michigan’s legislative leaders today and urge them to get a fix in place before the damaging services tax takes effect on Friday at midnight.”

MMA is requesting that all members contact Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop [517-373-2417, SenMBishop@senate.michigan.gov], Speaker of the House Andy Dillon [517-373-0857, andydillon@house.mi.gov], House Minority Leader Craig DeRoche [517-373-0827, craigderoche@house.mi.gov] and/or Senate Minority Leader Mark Schauer [517-373-2426, SenMSchauer@senate.michigan.gov] to voice your concerns about the services tax and the need to replace it before the deadline.

Please contact the legislative leaders today and urge them to come back to the table and keep working on a replacement for the costly and complicated services tax.
