Latest Advocacy NewsAgreement Reached on K-12 Budget7/2/2010Wednesday night, 6/30/10, agreement on the K-12 budget for Fiscal Year 2011 was finally reached in conference committee — the day before local school districts were required by law to have their budgets for next year finalized. The bill, SB 1163, includes an increase of $11 per student. $20 Million for Small Manufacturers7/2/2010On 6/25/10, Governor Jennifer Granholm announced that the state of Michigan will award nine small manufacturers $15 million in grants and $5 million in loans for a total of $20 million through the Clean Energy Advanced Manufacturing (CEAM) program. Michigan’s CEAM awards, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), are designed to help Michigan businesses diversify into high-growth, clean-energy industries. MMA Shares Manufacturing Perspective in Radio Interview7/1/2010Mike Johnston, MMA vice president of government affairs, was interviewed on 7/1/10 for a Michigan Business Beat radio program segment focused on the state’s budget dilemma and the need to reduce the size and cost of state government. When asked why shrinking government is so important, Johnston gave the following response: Coalition Opposes Con-Con6/18/2010MMA is part of a large and growing coalition, Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution, which opposes a constitutional convention (Con-Con) to rewrite the Michigan Constitution. The coalition believes a Con-Con would reopen many contentious issues that have been recently decided by voters, such as embryonic stem cell research, the affirmative action ban, gay marriage and assisted suicide. There have been 31 amendments to the constitution since 1963. |
